SIDERÚRGICAS EM AÇAILÂNDIA (MA): E OS DESAFIOS SOCIOAMBIENTAIS

Abstract

This study aimed to know and understand the main environmental challenges identified by the steel Açailândia-MA. Sought to identify and present the steelmakers to know the main existing environmental problems. For these objectives to be achieved it was necessary a bibliographic study on steel and pig iron production. Associated with the study of the steel was conducted a survey on the main environmental standards at federal, state and municipal levels, that they understand how public bodies have been dealing with steel and other harmful activities to the environment. During the field survey interviews were conducted with representatives of steel installed in the municipality of Açailândia, so it was possible to understand how was the pig iron production process and the damage resulting from this production, which in turn ultimately impact the environment and society, especially those living in the neighborhoods of steel, which are exposed daily to chemicals generated by the production of pig iron. With the development of research, it was possible to highlight and check the main challenges raised by the companies themselves and relate them to the challenges found in literature, legislation and documents in the local press. As a result it was realized that the environmental laws in the various hierarchical levels are sufficient in order to establish the defense of society and the environment, however, there is an application properly the principles and environmental standards, failure to follow these rules, directly affects the population and the environment, which ends up generating a sense of impunity, disrespect of steel to the community.
