ENSINO SUPERIOR EM SÃO LUÍS DE MONTES BELOS: POSSÍVEIS CONTRIBUIÇÕES PARA A SOCIEDADE LOCAL

Abstract

This paper presents a study about higher education in São Luís de Montes Belos, seeking out to identify its contributions to the development of the local society. The presence of higher education institutions in the city of São Luís, in the last twenty years, characterizes the city as a university center, which gives relevance to this study, which focuses on the emergence, growth and real contributions of higher education to the socio-cultural development of the city. Methodologically, refers to the qualitative research interviewing people who were the forerunners of higher education in São Luís de Montes Belos. Current directors of higher education institutions were interviewed too and applied a questionnaire to a sample of students of the universe researched. Discussing the presence of higher education in São Luís, in its relations with society in general and, in particular with the demands of the labor market, this research makes a record of the history of higher education in São Luís, in the last twenty years, highlighting their contributions to the local society.
