Abstract

The present work aimed to know and understand the main socio-environmental chal-lenges pointed out by Açailândia-MA steelmakers. It sought to identify and present the Steelmakers in order to know the main socio-environmental problems. In order to achieve these objectives, a bibliographic study on steelmaking and the production of pig iron was necessary. Associated with the study on steelmakers, a survey was car-ried out on the main environmental standards at federal, state and municipal level, so that one could understand how public entities have dealt with steelmaking and other activities harmful to the environment. During the field research, interviews were car-ried out with representatives of the steel mills located in the municipality of Açailândia, so it was possible to understand how the pig iron production process oc-curred and the damages resulting from this production. With the development of the research, it was possible to highlight and verify the main challenges raised by the companies themselves, and to relate them to the challenges found in literature, legis-lation and local press documents. As a result, it was perceived that environmental laws at the various hierarchical levels are sufficient to establish the defense of socie-ty and the environment, however, there is not an adequate application of environ-mental principles and norms, failure to comply with these norms, directly affects The population and the environment, which creates problems and challenges for steelmakers in relation to the population.
